Sergio A. Mims: Among the standouts of new production of Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' by Lyric Opera of Chicago was baritone Michael Sumuel as Masetto

Sergio A. Mims writes:

Last night I saw a fantastic new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni kicking off the 60th season of the Lyric Opera of Chicago directed by The Goodman Theater's Robert Falls and conducted by Sir Andrew Davis

A fascinating new production set of 1930's Spain with many original ideas and an excellent cast starring Mariusz Kweicien as Giovanni, Kyle Ketelsen as Leporello, Ana Maria Martinez as Donna Elvira among others.

But among the standouts was baritone Michael Sumuel as Masetto, not as the usual country bumpkin as his character is usually portrayed but as  a complex human torn between love and jealousy for his wife Zerlina sung by Andrianna Chuchman.

The production runs until Oct. 29.
