Movement Underway to Support African
American Artist to Complete Statue for
Georgia State Capitol

August 02, 2015 ( datsyn.com) - Atlanta, GA, Inclusive Selection Process Sought-- Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked tirelessly for the rights and freedom of African Americans. The proof of his work is evidenced in the approval of a statue in his honor, to be placed on site at the Georgia State Capitol building.
However, a tragic accident recently took the life of the sculptor who was slated to complete the statue, which is set to be unveiled on January 18, 2016 in Atlanta. Governor Nathan Deal (R-Georgia) has tapped State Rep. Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus) to find a suitable replacement.
Now, community members, activists, educators, business owners and others are rallying in support of artist Kevin Pullen to complete this historical task. Supporter Suzanne Fuller Burks says Kevin brings a “unique perspective that will honor Dr. King, his family and Georgians in general.” The group is seeking bi-partisan support from congressional, state and local officials to appoint an artist who truly understands and honors Dr. King’s plight and vision of a better America.
Burks and Pullen are working to ensure the selection of the sculptor to complete the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Statue is an inclusive and open process. Both, Burks and Pullen, are available to shine more light on this marking point in American history.
