Roderick Cox Among Five Conductors in the League of American Orchestras' 2016 National Conductor Preview with the Nashville Symphony May 11

New York, NY (March 10, 2016) – Five conductors have been selected to participate in the League of American Orchestras' 2016 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. On Wednesday, May 11 in Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center, they will lead the GRAMMY® Award-winning Nashville Symphony and receive guidance and mentoring from Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, himself a Preview alum. The League's prestigious showcase spotlights talented conductors poised for music directorships and staff conducting positions at America's orchestras, bringing them to the attention of search committees, orchestra administrators and artist managers. 

This year's Preview conductors are:


  • Conner Gray Covington, Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow, Curtis Institute of Music
  • Roderick Cox, Assistant Conductor, Minnesota Orchestra
  • Paul Ghun Kim, Resident Conductor, Oregon Symphony
  • Rebecca Miller, Music Director, Royal Tunbridge Wells Choral Society; Director of Orchestras, Royal Holloway University of London; Conductor, Royal Academy of Music Junior Department
  • Stefan Sanders, Montante Family Endowed Associate Conductor, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra; Music Director, Round Rock Symphony (TX); Music Director, Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra

Roderick Cox
Recognized as one of America’s fastest rising young conducting talents, Roderick Cox currently serves as the Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, a position he was appointed to in April 2015.

Previously, he served two years as the Assistant Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Georgia native, Cox was awarded the prestigious Robert J. Harth Conducting Prize from the Aspen Music Festival in 2013, which led to a return to the festival as a fellow and national recognition. He has also held prestigious fellowships with the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Chautauqua Music Festival.

Highlights for the 2015/2016 season include concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra, conducting debut concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Florida Orchestra, also return appearances with the Macon Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Sinfonietta.

Cox received a unanimous vote of confidence following his audition to join the Minnesota Orchestra.  After 6 months in the position, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine named Roderick "Best Assistant Conductor Who No Doubt Will Someday Run The Show"  in their annual Best of the Twin Cities round-up of 2015.  As Assistant Conductor of the Orchestra, Cox has a range of responsibilities from leading Young People’s Concerts, family programs and outdoor community concerts to serving as cover conductor for many Classical subscription and Live at Orchestra Hall concert performances.

Additionally, he serves as a key link to the community, participating in engagement activities, school visits and collaborations with other Minnesota arts
and cultural institutions. Cox earned his Master of Music degree in conducting from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His conducting teachers have been Mallory Thompson and Victor Yampolsky, Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, Mei-Ann Chen, and Adrian Gnam.
